On Saturday 30 October make sure you take part in CSV Make a Difference Day, the UK’s biggest day of volunteering!

Every year tens of thousands of people across the country take part through anything from creating community gardens to helping out isolated neighbours with their shopping, teaching financial literacy or renovating community centres.

Free resources include a Handbook packed with ideas and advice and an Action Pack containing t-shirts, posters, certificates (and free chocolate!) to help publicise your activity and thank volunteers.

This year the campaign is encouraging more families to volunteer together for the day, and a range of brilliant family friendly volunteering How-to Guides are available for inspiration.

Events for the campaign can take place between 23 October and 7 November, and anybody who wants to get involved can find an event on the campaign website, get in touch and go along on the day!

Charity commission equality impact assessment for online services

The Charity Commission for England and Wales is aiming to move the bulk of its interactions with its customers online, meaning that some traditional hard copy methods of doing business will be phased out. The commission is currently carrying out an equality impact assessment, consulting with charity trustees and employees and advisors on possible issues and impacts as a result of these changes. The consultation closes on 29 October 2010.

Nurse Leadership Grant Programme

Widening access through nurse leadership grants programme

Grants are available through Help the Hospices, funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing, to help nurses put into practice their ideas to help a wider range of people access their hospice and end of of life care. The grants aim to help develop and enhance the leadership abilities of the individual, as well as increase access to hospice and end of life care for people for whom access has previously been limited.

Two levels of funding are on offer:

seedcorn grants (up to £7,500) for work to demonstrate the need and find out more about who isn’t accessing your services and why
major grants (up to £25,000) to test out new ways of working, aimed at making hospice and end of life care services equitable for all.

Taskforce Looking to Reduce Bureaucratic Burdens on Voluntary Sector

New taskforce to reduce bureaucratic burdens on the voluntary sector

A new taskforce has been announced which aims to make it easier to run charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises by reducing bureaucratic burdens.

The taskforce will make recommendations about how redtape should be reduced, including changes to legislation or processes that are needed. Apart from making its own recommendations, the taskforce will work with other initiatives and will consider or feed into related work, including the HM Treasury and HM Revenue and Customs review of Gift Aid and the Home Office work on the criminal records and vetting and barring regime.

NICE Quality Standards for End of Life Care

NICE to develop quality standard for end of life care

NICE has announced that it is to develop nine new quality standards during 2010-2011. The NICE quality standards are markers of excellent care; they set out the structures and processes of care, as well as the best outcomes for patients that the standards are likely to bring about.

The new quality standards are for the management of breast cancer, type one and two diabetes, chronic kidney disease, end of life care, glaucoma, depression, chronic heart failure, alcohol dependence and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Landmark Ruling for Hospice

High court award for St Joseph’s Hospice

St Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney, London, has been awarded a payout in a landmark high court ruling. A judge ruled that the company held liable for the death of one of the patients cared for at St Joseph’s, who died from mesothelioma, should pay a contribution towards the hospice’s costs.Help the Hospices is currently looking into the implications of this ruling for other member hospices.

Town & Country Roofing Pembrokeshire

Paul Sartori Foundation are pleased to annouce the pledge of ongoing support from Penally based company, Town & Country Roofing who have joined the PS100 Club. Mr Paul Slack has also provided specialist advice to the Foundation and has shown his support in saving substantial costs for the charity for essential works to premises. Mr John Ross of PSSL, Tenby has been a long standing supporter of Paul Sartori Foundation and has pledged his continued support by joining the PS100 Club. Mr Ross fully appreciates the importance of our Hospice At Home Service provided in our community and recognises the choice it gives to the people of Pembrokeshire who are diagnosed with a life limiting illness in being able to stay at home with family. Paul Sartori Foundation are very grateful to Mr Ross, not only for his support as a local business but also for giving his own time as a volunteer for our ‘Meet The Street’ appeal.

Tenby hotelier, Adrian Andrews has pledged his ongoing support for Paul Sartori Foundation by joining the PS100 Club. The Heywood Mount Hotel have supported our vital service in a number of ways, by donating weekend breaks in one of their luxury four poster suites for charity auctions and providing a perfect venue for the Fashion Show organised by Tenby & District Soroptimists in the summer of 2009.The Heywood Mount Hotel also very kindly provided the perfect venue and a delicious 3 course meal for 80 guests for the launch of the Paul Sartori Unity lottery in 2009 which helps us to generate sustained income streams. In addition the Hotel have offered the use of their professional conference facilities for the Foundation’s training needs and have also organised fund raising events independantly as they appreciatethe financial challenge we face. Mr Andrews has said that he is delighted to be able to help such a worthwhile cause and is happy to continue to do so as he recognises the need forour service in Pembrokeshire.
